Bug sweeps conducted in residential properties and those conducted in commercial or corporate environments share the same fundamental methodology and use the same core detection equipment. But they differ significantly in scale, in the nature of the threat, in the typical motivations for the surveillance, and in the protocol around findings. Understanding those differences helps you understand what kind of sweep you need and what to expect from it.
Residential Bug Sweeps
Residential sweeps are instructed by private individuals concerned about surveillance in their homes, vehicles, or personal devices. The typical motivation is a relationship breakdown, a custody dispute, a stalking situation, or a concern about a rental property. The scope is typically one property and its associated vehicle, with device assessment where smartphones or tablets are also a concern.
The threat profile in residential cases tends to involve consumer-grade surveillance devices: off-the-shelf audio transmitters, magnetic GPS trackers, hidden cameras concealed in household objects, or monitoring applications installed on shared devices. These devices are widely available and require no technical expertise to deploy.
The residential sweep is typically conducted by a small team over two to four hours, covers every room in the property plus outbuildings and vehicles, and concludes with a verbal and written debrief. The findings, if any, are discussed confidentially with the client and advice is provided on next steps including police involvement.
Corporate Bug Sweeps
Corporate sweeps are instructed by businesses concerned about the confidentiality of their premises, meeting rooms, executive offices, or communications. The motivations range from competitive intelligence concerns to protection of commercially sensitive negotiations, from suspected employee misconduct involving surveillance to regulatory compliance requirements in certain sectors.
The threat profile in corporate cases can be more sophisticated: professional-grade surveillance equipment, hardwired devices with long battery lives, devices concealed within building infrastructure rather than household objects, and in some cases telecommunications interception. The scope is typically larger and the sweep more technically intensive.
Corporate sweeps may also involve a wider range of additional measures: telephone system analysis, IT network security assessment, physical security review, and ongoing TSCM monitoring programmes rather than a single point-in-time sweep. They are typically conducted by a larger team over a longer period and involve more detailed reporting requirements.
Which Type of Sweep Do You Need?
If your concern is about your home, your personal vehicle, or devices associated with your personal life, a residential sweep is the appropriate service. If your concern is about a business premises, a commercial vehicle fleet, or office communications, a corporate sweep is what you need.
Some situations sit at the boundary: a person who works from home and is involved in a commercial dispute, for example, may need a sweep that covers both the domestic space and the home office. We discuss the specific circumstances with you in the initial consultation and ensure that the sweep we propose covers everything that the situation requires.
