A professional bug sweep — known in the security industry as a Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM) inspection — is a systematic, methodical examination of a property, vehicle, or device for the presence of covert surveillance equipment. This article explains what that process actually involves, from the moment our team arrives at your property to the final debrief, so that you know what to expect if you instruct us.

Before the Sweep: The Briefing

Every sweep begins with a confidential briefing. We ask about the specific circumstances that have led to your concern, the history of access to the property or vehicle, and any specific objects or areas you want us to focus on. This background helps us prioritise the investigation and focus on the locations and device types most consistent with your specific situation.

We also ask you not to tell anyone else that the sweep is taking place. If a device is present and someone is monitoring it, alerting them to the sweep gives them the opportunity to deactivate the device before we arrive. The sweep should come as a complete surprise to anyone who may have placed a device.

Phase One: RF Detection

The first phase of a property sweep uses specialist radio frequency detection equipment to identify any devices that are actively transmitting. Listening bugs, audio transmitters, and cameras that stream live footage all emit RF signals that can be detected by a calibrated RF scanner.

The detection process involves sweeping the scanner slowly through each area of the property, covering all surfaces and objects, while monitoring for any anomalous signal. The scanner is calibrated for the frequency ranges associated with common surveillance devices, and the operative is trained to distinguish genuine surveillance device signals from the background RF noise produced by mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, and other legitimate electronics.

Phase Two: Non-Linear Junction Detection

Not all surveillance devices transmit by radio frequency. Hardwired devices that record audio or video to a local memory card do not emit any RF signal and cannot be detected by an RF scanner. Non-linear junction detection (NLJD) equipment identifies the presence of electronic components — transistors, diodes — within objects or walls, revealing concealed electronics even where no transmission is taking place.

The NLJD probe is passed over all surfaces in the property, including walls, ceilings, and floors, and over all objects that could plausibly conceal a device. It provides a reliable method of detecting concealed electronic circuits regardless of whether they are currently active.

Phase Three: Camera Lens Detection

Hidden cameras require a lens, and that lens produces a characteristic reflection when illuminated by a specific wavelength of light. Camera lens detection equipment emits an infrared or visible light beam and identifies the distinctive reflection pattern produced by a camera lens concealed within an object.

This phase covers all objects in the property that could conceal a camera, with particular attention to those positioned to face common areas, bedrooms, and bathrooms. It is effective at identifying cameras that record to local storage and therefore produce no RF signal and no electronic circuit detectable by the NLJD.

Phase Four: Physical Inspection

Alongside the equipment-based phases, a thorough physical inspection of the property is conducted. This involves manually examining electrical fittings, smoke detectors, and other fixtures for signs of tampering; checking objects that may have been introduced to the property or moved; and assessing any area that the equipment phases have flagged as potentially significant.

Phase Five: Network Analysis

For residential properties, we conduct a network analysis: scanning the home Wi-Fi network for connected devices and identifying any that are not accounted for by known legitimate equipment. Network-connected cameras, smart devices, and any other equipment streaming from the network are identified and assessed.

The Debrief

At the conclusion of the sweep, we debrief you on the findings. Where a device has been found, we explain what it is, where it was, and advise on next steps. Where the sweep has found nothing, we explain what was checked and how, and give you a written summary of the sweep. You will know precisely what has been investigated and what the conclusion is.
