Larger spaces, more extensive electrical and telecommunications infrastructure, more frequent contractor and visitor access, and a wider range of furniture and equipment supplied by third parties all create more opportunities for a device to be introduced and to remain undetected. Power Sockets
Power sockets remain one of the most exploited concealment locations in any commercial environment, for the same reasons they are exploited residentially: a justified presence on every wall, ready access to mains power, and an internal cavity sufficient to conceal a small transmitting device. Double and multi-gang sockets, increasingly common in modern office fit-outs to accommodate the proliferation of charging and power requirements, offer more internal space than older single sockets and are correspondingly more attractive to anyone seeking to conceal a device.
Smoke Detectors
Ceiling-mounted smoke detectors are ubiquitous in commercial premises, already wired in many cases to a central system, and rarely subject to close visual inspection by anyone other than maintenance staff. Their ceiling position, facing down into the room, also provides an ideal vantage point for a concealed audio or video device. Detectors that differ subtly in model or appearance from the rest of the building’s installed base, or that have been the subject of an unscheduled maintenance visit, warrant specific attention.
Boardroom Furniture
Boardroom tables, credenzas, and seating are frequently sourced from external suppliers, may be moved between rooms or refurbished by third-party contractors, and are rarely inspected internally as a matter of routine. A device concealed within the underside of a boardroom table or within a credenza used to store presentation equipment benefits from extended, largely unsupervised access to the room’s most sensitive conversations. Furniture introduced as a gift, on loan, or following a refurbishment is a specific area of concern that a TSCM sweep addresses directly.
Ceiling Spaces
The void above a suspended ceiling provides substantial concealment space, access to power and data cabling, and a location that is, by design, intended to be out of sight and infrequently inspected. Devices concealed in ceiling spaces are typically more sophisticated installations, reflecting the additional access and technical knowledge required, and are accordingly more associated with serious, well-resourced threats than opportunistic ones. Non-linear junction detection and physical inspection of accessible ceiling void areas are standard components of a thorough commercial sweep.
Telephone Systems
Telecommunications infrastructure — desk handsets, conference phones, and the PBX or VoIP infrastructure connecting them — represents one of the more technically sophisticated concealment and interception vectors, because a compromised telephone system can capture audio without any additional standalone device being introduced into the room at all. Conference room speakerphones, in particular, combine a legitimate and powerful microphone with a plausible reason for the device’s presence, making them an efficient target for compromise. Specialist inspection of telecommunications equipment, distinct from general RF and physical sweep techniques, is required to assess this vector properly.
